My wife Sarah and I opened the first HushPuppies restaurant just north of our current location with a $5000 loan, a used cooker, and some hand-me-down tables and chairs. On Good Friday in April of 2003, history was made in Henderson, TX.
I knew food, but Sarah knew people, and she knew how to treat them right. It wasn’t long before we had to rent additional tables and chairs to seat the folks who kept coming back for more on Friday and Saturday nights.
Delicious fried fish and fresh seafood—seasoned and served up right—brought people in from all over. But it was Sarah’s Southern hospitality that brought them back time and time again.
So we paid my brother back, added on, and bought more tables and chairs. We expanded our menu to include homestyle favorites, prepared perfectly by our kitchen crew, most of whom are still cooking with us today.
Friends told their friends, who told their friends, and so on. Pretty soon, we were popping at the seams and looking for a larger location.
We purchased the property on which the HushPuppies you know and love sits today. We’ve added on twice to accommodate the crowds. But sometimes people still have to wait on the front porch to get a table.
They don’t mind. The food’s worth the wait. And they can play a little cornhole to pass the time until they get to order up and enjoy their favorites.
Sadly, our sweet Sarah passed in 2017.
HushPuppies wouldn’t be what it is today without her influence, so we keep her spirit alive in the way we treat our customers—like family.
